Well, SMF (simple Machine Forums) are great for a beginner, because unlike PHPBB, all you need to do is a few clicks of a mouse to add Mods/add ons to your forum. But, is this worth the features of SMF? There are LOTS of SMF add ons, but they don't all comply with each version of SMF. Lots of add ons will say "this add on does not work with this version of SMF", so there are alot of add ons, but they don't all work together. Thats it, Right? NO! my forums had a bug once that made the register button not work right, so no one could register. It made my forums useless. Since then I've moved on to PHPBB and it's alot better.

CONCLUSION:
Don't use SMF, use PHPBB.
