From the moment we hear that signature music from six seasons on HBO, we are back in the lives of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte, along with Mr. Big, Steve, Smith and Harry. It’s like a moment hasn’t passed since the last time we watched these successful, beautiful, strong and passionate ladies walk the walk and talk the talk of modern day New York. This reunion has been a long time coming, 4 years to be precise since we left these characters; yet Writer/Director Michael Patrick King has done an exceptional job of catching us up on their lives, loves and losses.

Sex and the City is a love letter to Manhattan and for anyone who has visited the island, you will leave the theatre with an ache to return again. Shot almost entirely in the city, Manhattan becomes a character of its own. It would have never worked if the executive producers had decided to shoot in Toronto and disguise it as the Big Apple. It was a pleasure to watch every scene and although I'm not a clotheshorse, one who revels in the latest fashions or flips through the pages of Vogue, I appreciated the beauty of the clothing and accessories on display. Like any other film, these items were the props, just as much as the whip was a prop for Indiana Jones.

I watched this film at a multiplex with approximately 250 other women and 4 men including my very own husband. Yes, this is the ultimate “chick flick” of the summer! For its six season run Sex and the City became a weekly date night at home for us and if you and yours were the same, this is a must see evening for the two of you.

The film stars Sarah Jessica Parker as writer Carrie Bradshaw, Kristin Davis as Charlotte York- Goldbladt, Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes, scene-stealer Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones and Chris Noth as Mr. Big (a.k.a John James Preston). A large part of the film revolves around the pending nuptials of Carrie and Big, yet it is far from the exclusive plot line. There is also a good chunk of time spent on the ups and downs in Miranda and Steve’s relationship, the life that Samantha has made for herself in Los Angeles with actor Smith Jarred and the ongoing love affair that Harry and Charlotte have created. The storyline given to Kim Cattrall has the most depth, best lines and is guaranteed to entertain all fans of this naughty P.R. rep.

Sex and the City is two and a half hours in length, surprising since most studio productions tend to stick to the 120-minute mark. Michael Patrick King uses every minute to his advantage in telling the ongoing story of these four friends, and depending on how comfortable you are in theatre seating, it may or may not seem too long for you.

In addition to the original cast, there is one small but significant addition, Jennifer Hudson as personal assistant Louise, a young woman from St. Louis who came to New York City seeking love and instead found friendship and a knack for organizing Carrie’s life. This former American Idol finalist proves that her first big screen role in Dream Girls and the Oscar nomination that followed two years ago wasn’t a fluke, she can act with the best of them!

This film is a perfect blend of nostalgia, well-timed humour, serious heart-heavy moments, a solid screenplay and a bit of the raunchy stuff we’ve all come to expect of the Sex and the City franchise. It’s proving to be a huge audience draw and I’m predicting another round of cosmos on the Lower East Side in the foreseeable future.

Kudos to writer/director Michael Patrick King and Sarah Jessica Parker for putting in the effort to bring the cast back together. I enjoyed the film from start to finish, no complaints whatsoever. If you are a fan of the series this is a MUST see!
