If you want my opinion do not go with ATI. although it is a Canadian company ;) I don't recommend there high-end graphic card Unless you are planing on watching or making a lot of GPU demanding movies. ATI's Radeon HD series are lower ranked in the gaming market but is amazingly used in the media viewing, media editing ect. Although most resent Radeon HD card have more stream processors than GeForce 8 or even some GeForce 9's. Geforce 8 and 9 still exel in the price to power ratio. Let us take ATI's recent Radeon HD 3870 and compaire it to GeForce 9600 GT:
GeForce 9600
Fabrication: 65nm G94/D9M GPU
Memory: 256MB-1GB GDDR3 900Hz
Stream processors: 64
Transistor count: 505 Million
Core Clock:650MHz
Shader version: 4.0
DirectX support: 10.0
OpenGL support: 2.1
Cost range: $169-$189 :
Radeon HD 3870
Fabrication: 55nm RV670
Memory: 256MB - 1GB GDDR4
Transistor count: 666 Million
Stream processors 320
Core Clock: 825MHz Shader version:4.1
DirectX support:10.1
OpenGL support:2.0
Cost range: 169.99-$249.99
As we can see The ATI Radeon HD 3870 exels in many hardware specs, But as I said it HD dose not exel in gaming area as proven by many gamers. Also it cost a lot more (obviously) than GeFocrce 9 but the HD 3780 dose not take full advantage of that harware in gaming, but more in media vewing (probably why the series is givien the sufix "HD")
